The Stockton Bight Sand Dunes extend from the northern end of Stockton Township to Birubi Point - 32 kilometres long, 2500 hectares (3500 square kilometres) and 1 km wide.

Sand dunes are composed of quartz sand particles washed down from sandstone plateau around Sydney, and provide 80% of Australians glass mining sand. Sand & Mineral mining of Stockton Bight have 15 licensed mining companies, and cover approx 30 % of the area.

Tin city is up from 11 Shacks, squatters live in desert condition, battling the natural elements for 50 years. When the wind rises and the sand dunes become mobile, residents are forced to band together into digging shifts, toiling around the clock to save their shacks from being buried; the sand advances nearly 1 metre per year.

The water near Tin City is referred to as Coca Cola. Dig a small well by hand only a few feet deep and it will quickly fill with a black water that tastes as pure as rainwater.
